CLARINET MARMELADE - Free Jazz Leadsheet
“clarinet marmelade” was composed in 1918 by Larry Shields and Henry Ragas of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, who made the first well-known recording later that year. The tune quickly became a vehicle for early clarinet virtuosity in the New Orleans and Chicago traditions.
Known for its rapid melodic lines and energetic breaks, the composition uses a ragtime-influenced multi-strain format. Its demanding lead part has made it a long-standing showcase piece for skilled clarinetists.
