WE THREE - Free Jazz Leadsheet
“we three” (also known as “we three (my echo, my shadow, and me)”) was written in 1939 by Nelson Cogane, Sammy Mysels, and Dick Robertson. It became popular in the big-band and vocal-orchestra era.
The first commercial recordings were made in 1940 by The Ink Spots and Frank Sinatra with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. Later notable interpretations include versions by Brenda Lee and Ella Fitzgerald.
The lyrics explore themes of loneliness, loss, and memory, symbolized by the 'echo' and 'shadow.' Musically, it is structured as a flowing pop ballad with gentle harmonies supporting emotional vocal delivery.
