THE KING - Free Jazz Leadsheet

"The King" was written by Count Basie and first recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on July 7, 1952, in New York. Created during a period of renewed big-band activity, the piece showcases Basie’s minimalist piano style set against the tight, powerful ensemble sound of his mid-century band.

Later performances by Basie’s touring groups helped solidify the tune’s place in his repertoire. Built on blues foundations with prominent riff exchanges among the brass and reeds, the arrangement highlights Basie’s hallmark balance between sparseness and intensity.
