CHINA BOY - Free Jazz Leadsheet

“china boy,” written in 1922 by Phil Boutelje and Dick Winfree, first entered the public ear through dance-band recordings of the mid-1920s. One of the earliest widely circulated versions was made by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, helping the tune enter the early jazz repertoire.

The song’s upbeat melody and straightforward structure made it a favorite for hot-jazz improvisers, especially in small-group Chicago settings. Its driving syncopation and bright 32-bar form encourage lively ensemble passages and spirited solo work.
