BLUESOLOGY - Free Jazz Leadsheet
"bluesology" was composed by Milt Jackson (1923‑1999) and first recorded on February 23 1949 in New York City by the Milt Jackson Quartet for the Savoy label.
Over the years the tune became a staple for the Modern Jazz Quartet and has been revived by many jazz combos and soloists, thanks to its memorable riff and blues‑based structure. The piece conveys a blend of humour and reflection, harnessing the blues tradition in a swinging jazz context and giving soloists space to express their personality. Structurally, the tune is built on a riff‑driven head followed by improvisation over a 12‑bar blues or blues‑inflected form, under a moderate swing groove and featuring clearly articulated melodic lines that invite conversational interplay among instruments.
