WHAT ARE YOU DOING THE REST OF YOUR LIFE - Free Jazz Leadsheet

“what are you doing the rest of your life” was composed by Michel Legrand, with lyrics by the husband-and-wife team Alan and Marilyn Bergman. It was introduced in the 1969 film *The Happy Ending*.

The song first appeared in the film, performed by Michael Dees, and soon after was recorded by Barbra Streisand in 1969. Over the decades it has become a jazz standard, with notable versions by Sarah Vaughan (arranged and conducted by Legrand), Bill Evans, Frank Sinatra, Chris Botti & Sting, and others.

The lyrics reflect longing and commitment, asking the beloved to share not only a moment, but the entirety of life. Musically, it features Legrand’s rich, lyrical melody and layered harmonic structure, with a form that allows both intimate vocal rendering and expansive instrumental exploration.
