TAILGATE RAMBLE - Free Jazz Leadsheet
"Tailgate Ramble" is a traditional New Orleans jazz tune often credited to the early Dixieland repertory and associated with trombonist Kid Ory. The first notable recording was made on June 26, 1926, by Ory’s Sunshine Orchestra in Los Angeles, one of the earliest commercially recorded African American jazz bands.
Later versions by the Firehouse Five Plus Two, Preservation Hall ensembles, and numerous traditional jazz groups helped reinforce its place as a staple of Dixieland performance. With no lyrics, the piece emphasizes energetic ensemble interplay, built on a march-like two-beat feel. Its trademark feature is the "tailgate" trombone style—sliding, rhythmic counterlines that give the tune its name and contribute to its lively street-band character.
