“tiger rag” (sometimes spelled “Tiger Rag”) is a jazz standard first recorded in 1918 by the Original Dixieland Jass Band, who are also credited as its composers, including Nick LaRocca. The piece became emblematic of early jazz and Dixieland style.
The first recording occurred in New York City in 1918 and the tune was quickly adopted by many jazz bands. Notable interpretations include recordings by Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Benny Goodman, and Charlie Parker. Characterized by a fast tempo and breakneck runs, it features call-and-response patterns and a simple harmonic foundation that allows for virtuosic improvisation.
