BUGLE CALL RAG - Free Jazz Leadsheet
"bugle call rag" (also known originally as "bugle call blues") was composed by Jack Pettis, Billy Meyers and Elmer Schoebel in 1922. Its first popular recording was by the New Orleans Rhythm Kings on August 29, 1922 in Richmond, Indiana. The tune has since been revived by swing‑era orchestras such as Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller, and remains a favourite among Dixieland and big‑band groups.
The song conveys exuberance and the playful spirit of early jazz. Musically, it features a fast‑tempo riff‑driven head followed by improvisational choruses, built upon blues‑inflected harmonies and a 32‑bar form that allows ensemble interplay and instrumental solos.
